About Alastair and Steambox Studio

During the autumn of 2020 I decided to make a change from a three decade long IT career and spend the rest of my days bending wood.
My first project was to create a workshop space to do it in.
I designed and made it all from scratch, almost entirely with hand-tools. I will soon be creating a page about how I constructed it.
I have been interested in woodworking since my father inspired me when I was a child. He made many practical things for the family in his spare time, including a single bed frame for me (so I no longer had to sleep on a mattress on the floor) and the bed is still in use 50 years later.
During secondary school woodworking lessons, the first thing I made was a wooden model car and I loved how beautiful the pattern of the grain was, especially as I sanded and then varnished it.
All of these things and more led me to undertake woodworking projects for my own family including a fortress style adventure playground for my children.
Nowadays I like to focus on bending wood using steam to create beautiful, unusual and useful things…
